Dec 3rd: The Icebreaker Application

The third day of The Refinement Club’s Advent calendar features Martin Ødegaarden Henriksen aka Den Glade Pendler. Enjoy his funny and smart idea.

X-mas is a jolly good time. At least for people with jolly good lives. Sure, some think that their mother-in-law is a PITA (Pain in The Ass), but that`s forgotten when da freakin Christmas dinner is on da table and the helium-voiced boy choir sings about happy angels in heaven somewhere in da background. It’s pleasant to hold on to this image, but we can’t forget about da dark side of this story. A dark side, that goes by the name loneliness. Every year, sad peeps sit alone in their apartments, waiting for it all to pass. These are the people I want to help with my idea. So lets make it fun to be lonely.

It’s needless to be a loner in these weblicious times. It shouldn’t be difficult to find a match, even if your personality is extremely challenged. But still, to actually reach out can be pretty damn difficult. The first step is probably the longest, so lets make it short. What we know for a fact is, that for some people, first contact is a lot easier on a device, either its on the net or the mobile phone. My idea is to steal the Skype-me function from Skype, polish it and take it to da streets. I’m talking about a super socialisation application, a tool to meet new potential friends: The Icebreaker.

First of all we make a website. Here you have to answer a few personal questions, define your profile and what kind of company you’re searching for. By answering these questions, you decide whether you want to meet the new peeps in a bar, at the mall, out in nature – or another place/s you personally prefer to meet new peeps. Then you type in the age of da human beings you want to meet, followed by interests and other aspects that are important to you. When all that is done, you install your application and turn it on. Now you are available. Does it tickle inside?

Then, when you are in a pre-defined area, suddenly you get a sign on your phone. You’re in one of your zones, and someone wants to break your ice. In order to do so, you have to check the person/s out. You don’t want to meet up with a freak. (Or maybe you do?) They have to check you out as well. All this happens on the mobile. How? I don’t know yet, but what I do know, is that it’s pretty neat: You start the dialogue on a device, and after checking one another out – if everything is cool – you meet. And now, its all up to you. No more loneliness. Case closed.

Would you like to submit your own idea to our calendar? Go ahead!
