Dec 8th: Loot Deck - Making chores fun
It’s the eight day of our Advent Calendar, and a Wednesday, so here’s an idea from The Refinement Club’s very own Johannes Rummelhoff about making chores more rewarding to do.
Problem:
I procrastinate. Fold clothes? It just got damn boring. Do the dishes? Come on! I’m doing it after I read this chapter. I promise. Wash the house? Really, I did it three weeks ago! What’s in it for me, besides a clean home? Nothing!
Idea:
Make it rewarding to do chores.
What if every time you did a task, there was a possibility that you actually got a neat reward? Why does millions of people play World of Warcraft? They get rewards every time they do something. They grind, killing monsters for countless of hours, just because there is a slight possibility that they actually are going to get that unique armor that everybody envies. Let’s tap into that knowledge and make chores fun.
The idea is pretty simple. When you’ve done your mundane task you get a reward. The rewards vary in range, from big splurges to a bite of a chocolate bar. The beauty lies in the serendipity of the rewards. Some times you get candy and other times you get a new TV. How does this idea work? A simple deck of cards. When you deserve a reward, draw a random card. If you get the “Coffee”-card, buy yourself a café latte. If you get the “Five minutes of silence”-card, go relax for five minutes. If you get the “Buy your self a new TV”-card, head out and buy yourself a new TV (I hope you got the dough;))
It’s pretty simple. The deck of cards just makes it more interesting. What’s my reward this time? If I wash the clothes maybe I can go and buy myself that game that I really want to try out.
Me:
I’m Johannes Rummelhoff and I work as a Creative at Mediafront in Oslo, Norway. On my spare time I run The Refinement Club together with Gro Larsson. I love big ideas!
Would you like to submit your own idea to our calendar? Go ahead!
