Augmented Art

Last weekend Johannes went to the National Art Museum in Oslo. Great art from lots of different artists, but it’s hard to know everything (or anything) about the artwork. This led Johannes’ girlfriend to end up using the iPhone to google the artists so she could learn more from the experience. So the idea of a tailored experience utilizing the artworks, smartphones and knowledge sharing was born.

Most museums have guided tours where you can take part in the expertise its employees possess, but we prefer to wander around on our own. So we think the museums should share their expertise through an augmented art application.

By pointing your smartphone at a work of art you could get audial and textual information about the piece. You should be able to choose what kind of information you would like:

  • About the artist, and his/her connections with other artists
  • About the specific piece
  • About the time it was created in
  • Point to different details in a piece to get information about the symbolism used
  • Views from art critics
  • Fun facts

A gaming element can be added by including quizzes on e.g paintings, where you could win replica posters of the painting in question. Another fun thing to add would be to include an augmented museum treasure hunt, or easter eggs, so unexpected rewarding things could occur if you happen to stumble upon certain virtual objects.

Augmented Art puts a layer on top of the art and tells the story of the artwork. It also makes for a much more engaging trip to the museum. And why not share your art experience with your friends?

Of course we would love to add a social layer to the artworks. So you need to be able to leave comments for others to see, your thoughts and interpretations on a specific work. And share your comments online. And rate. And “like”.

What do you think, what would enhance YOUR art experience?
